How do I track which employee has which laptop?
You check the device out to a person. Scan its asset tag or look it up, enter who is taking it, and optionally set a due-back date. The device then shows as checked out to that name, and its history keeps every past holder with dates. Names are entered as free text rather than pulled from an HR system, so you can also check equipment out to a team, a department, or a site.
Do I need special asset tags, or can I use serial numbers?
Either works. Every item has a barcode field and a SKU field, so you can record the manufacturer serial number and search on it. If you want to scan, print QR or barcode labels on a normal label printer and stick them on the device. Scanning uses your phone camera, so there is no dedicated scanner hardware to buy.
What happens when someone leaves the company?
Their equipment stays checked out to their name until it is checked back in, which is the point: the open checkout is the record of what has not come back. Filter for items still checked out and you have the offboarding list. Each device also keeps its full movement and checkout history, so you can see when it was issued and who had it before.
Is this an ITAM tool? Will it discover devices on my network?
